Why SEO tools are vague about pricing, and what we publish instead

Open the pricing page of any major SEO platform and you will find tiers, feature ticks, and somewhere near the bottom a limit expressed in units you have no way to convert into your actual usage. "10,000 rows per month." Rows of what? Costing what?

This is not an accident, and it is not really dishonesty either. It is a structural consequence of how these businesses work — but it does leave you unable to answer two questions you genuinely need answered: what will this cost me next month, and what did that action just cost?

Why the vagueness happens

Three reasons, none of them sinister.

Their costs really are per-request. Every rank check and research lookup is a real call to real infrastructure. So every platform meters something internally, whether or not it shows you.

Predictable pricing invites optimisation. If customers can see that action A costs ten times action B, they use less of A. That is efficient for them and worse for revenue.

Feature gating sells tiers better. "Backlink analysis requires Pro" converts more reliably than "backlink analysis costs 3 units". So features get withheld from lower tiers, even when the marginal cost of providing them is near zero.

That last one is the part we object to most. It means the tier you are on determines what you are allowed to look at, rather than how much you can afford to look at — and the two are not the same thing at all.

What we do instead

One currency, published rates, every tool open on every plan.

A credit is one unit of outbound work. Checking a keyword against one page of results costs 1. Fetching a URL for a technical tool costs 1. A keyword research lookup costs 1 to 3. The complete price list is on a public page, and it is the same table the software bills from.

Every charge writes a ledger row with the action, the amount and the balance afterwards. You can always answer "what did that cost, and why?" — which sounds like a small thing until you have spent an afternoon trying to.

And nothing is feature-gated. The smallest plan opens the same tools as the largest. What a bigger plan buys is room, not permission.

The honest downside

Being fair about this: usage-based pricing has a genuine drawback, and it is that you have to think about it. A flat "unlimited" tier is cognitively easier, even when it is quietly rate-limited behind the scenes.

We manage that in three ways. Every plan is sized against realistic usage, with the arithmetic shown rather than asserted. An alert warns you before the balance becomes a problem. And a charge that cannot be afforded stops cleanly and says so — you are never left holding a half-finished batch you have already paid for.

Questions worth asking any tool

  1. What does one rank check cost you? If they cannot answer in a unit, they do not want you optimising against it.
  2. What happens at the limit? Hard stop, throttle, or overage charge? All three exist, and only one of them can produce a surprise invoice.
  3. Which features are gated rather than metered? Gating usually reflects sales strategy, not cost.
  4. Can I see an itemised ledger? If not, you cannot audit your own bill.

None of this makes us cheaper — sometimes we will not be. It makes us predictable, which over a year is usually worth more.
